Portion size

How we calculate the amount of food your cat receives

Updated over 3 weeks ago

At KatKin, we currently provide 6 different portion sizes of our recipes

  1. 150kcal

  2. 200kcal

  3. 250kcal

  4. 300kcal

  5. 350kcal

  6. 400kcal

No matter which portion size your cat needs and which plan you choose, you'll always receive 2 portions per day. This is first calculated when you sign up for a trial box on our website. Your cat's details can be edited at any time after this in your online account.

For example if your cat needs 400kcal per day and you're on our standard monthly plan, you'll receive 28 sets of trays (or 56 portions). Each set contains a morning and an evening portion.

We use 4 different pieces of information about your cat to determine what portion size they need:

Age, along with weight and activity level, directly impacts calorie needs, while the Body Condition Score helps fine-tune portion sizes to achieve or maintain an ideal weight.

  1. Weight (in kg)

  2. Age

  3. Body Condition Score or BCS (skinny, just right, chubby, obese)

  4. Activity level (inactive, active, explorer) For instance, an active cat may need a higher calorie tray than an inactive one, and older cats may need portions adjusted to ensure they are maintaining a healthy weight. Even indoor cats can have high activity levels through daily play or exploring. When determining tray size, consider their lifestyle and adjust portions based on observed eating habits and activity.

You can update these details in your account at any time. Making changes may mean our calorie calculator suggests a different portion size to the one your cat is currently on.

We won’t change your cat’s portion automatically, as it will change the price of your plan. This means the portion your cat receives is completely up to you. But, if your cat is eating just KatKin, we recommend following the calculator’s suggestion so your cat gets their ideal amount of daily calories.

We recommend regularly monitor your cat’s weight and body condition to make sure they're receiving the right amount of food. Our calorie calculator will suggest new tray sizes if your cat's profile is updated.

KatKin is designed to give your cat the perfect amount of calories they need, in order to be their ideal weight. That means that if your cat needs to put on or lose weight (by selecting skinny, chubby or obese), keeping their details up to date ensures we won’t send too much or too little food.

For example, an elderly or underweight cat might benefit from a tray size higher than the suggested baseline to support healthy weight gain. Similarly, updating their details when transitioning from chubby to a "just right" body condition helps refine calorie intake and avoid overfeeding.

If you’d like to check which portion a cat would need, before adding another cat to your account, you can enter their details here in our retail portion calculator.

Additionally, kittens have unique dietary needs before they reach adulthood, and their calorie targets will need to be updated as they grow. You can do this by regularly updating their details every 2-3 months so we can make sure we're sending them the right amount of food as they grow.

Can I order multiple portion sizes in one box?

This is a good question, but no, unfortunately not. Our boxes have to be packed with just 1 tray size and they can’t be mixed.

Feeding large breeds

Lucky enough to own large breed such as a Maine Coon, Siberian, or Savannah? Our largest portion size might not be enough to cover their daily calories.

Our largest tray is 400kcal, but some larger cats need even more calories that what we offer.

We recommend entering their details here in our retail portion calculator to check how many calories they need per day.

If you’re feeding only KatKin, we may need to add a second plan to your account in order to send additional food for your cat. For example, one box of 400kcal and a second box of 200kcal (this will also mean you qualify for our 5% multicat discount).
