How we calculate your cat's portion size

How much food will you receive in your cat's trial box?

Updated this week

Never thought about how many calories your cat needs per day? Don’t worry, you’re not alone.

For years, cat parents' only choice was to feed 85g sachets or tins from the supermarket. But every cat is different and their food should be tailored for them.

That’s why we select a portion specifically for your cat. To make it easy to know how many calories they need per day, in as many portions as they prefer.

Our trays come pre-split in two portions: one for the morning and one for the evening.

This is because we heard from cat parents that the majority of people feed their cat twice a day.

But we know this isn’t true for every cat + owner.

Because a tray of food = all the calories your cat needs for a day, you can split this into as many portions as they prefer. An open tray of KatKin can be popped in the fridge for up to 2 days.

Why do we use calories and not grams?

🧪 Sorry, we’re about to get science-y. We have 7 different recipes here at KatKin, but not all meat is identical when it comes to calorific density.

Chicken is less calorific than a fattier meat, such as pork or beef. This means it takes more chicken than beef to reach the same amount of calories (think: choosing to eat leaner meat when you’re on a diet and cutting out fattier meat such as bacon.)

So, our 200kcal trays of Cluck will weigh more than 200kcal of Mooo or Oink.

If we gave your cat 150g of chicken and 150g of beef, beef would be higher in calories. This is why we use calories and not grams in our portion sizes.

How we calculate your cat’s portion size

At KatKin, we currently provide 6 different portion sizes of our recipes;

  1. 150kcal

  2. 200kcal

  3. 250kcal

  4. 300kcal

  5. 350kcal

  6. 400kcal

We use 4 different pieces of information about your cat to determine what portion size they need:

  1. Weight (in kg)

  2. Age

  3. Body Condition Score (skinny, just right, chubby, obese)

  4. Activity level (inactive, active, explorer)

Once you’ve confirmed these details, we’ll let you know which portion we think they need in the ‘My Plan’ stage of signing up.

KatKin is designed to give your cat the perfect amount of calories they need, in order to be their ideal weight. That means that if your cat needs to put on or lose weight (by selecting skinny, chubby or obese), keeping their details up to date after the trial ensures we won’t send too much or too little food.

👉 You can follow the steps here to update your cats details and change their portion size.
