Regular supermarket cat food is often a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to portioning. Most tins are around 70g and sachets around 85g, and it's up to you as a customer to work out how many of these your cat should eat each day.
This can be tricky, because cats have very different calorie needs depending on their age, weight, activity level and body condition. If you also feed dry food alongside wet food, it becomes even harder to work out a fair comparison.
Why KatKin portions are different
At KatKin, we portion our food based on calories, not weight.
Calories are what actually determine whether your cat is eating the right amount of food to maintain a healthy weight. Because our recipes are made with fresh meat and very few fillers, they tend to be more calorie-dense and nutritionally complete than many supermarket foods.
This means that comparing KatKin trays directly to tins or sachets by weight isn't an accurate comparison.
For example, feeding your cat 2–3 tins a day doesn’t necessarily mean they would need 2–3 KatKin trays. Instead, we calculate exactly how many calories your cat needs and send the right total amount of food per day to meet those needs.
Meat vs gravy or jelly
Another important difference is what makes up the weight of the food.
Many supermarket tins and sachets contain a mixture of:
Meat or animal derivatives
Gravy or jelly
Grains
This means that the 70g or 85g weight includes the gravy or jelly, not just the meat content.
At KatKin, our recipes are 100% fresh meat and offal with added vitamins and minerals, with no gravy or jelly added to bulk out the portion. This means the weight of the food you receive is entirely made up of the nutritious ingredients your cat actually eats.
For example, a cat who needs 200 kcal per day might receive one tray of KatKin Cluck per day.
1 tray of Cluck contains 200 kcal
The tray weighs 161g in total
This is pre-split into two meals of around 80g each
At typical plan pricing, this would cost around:
£2.25 per day
£1.13 per portion
Because KatKin is tailored to your cat’s calorie needs and made entirely from meat, many customers find that the daily cost is similar to - or sometimes better value than - feeding multiple supermarket tins or sachets, while providing a fresh, high-meat diet.
How we calculate your cat’s portions
Rather than asking “How many trays does my cat need?”, the more useful question is:
“How many calories does my cat need per day?”
To work this out, we use your cat’s:
Age
Weight
Activity level
Body condition score
Using this information, we calculate the right daily calorie intake and send the exact amount of KatKin needed per day. You can then choose how to serve it - for example splitting trays into two meals or smaller portions throughout the day.
