Watching your kitten grow is one of the most rewarding parts of being a cat parent - but it also means their feeding needs change fast. Keeping your kitten’s details up to date in your KatKin account helps ensure they’re always getting the perfect portion for their age, weight, and activity level.
Why keeping your kitten’s weight up to date matters
Your kitten’s weight plays a big role in how we calculate their daily calorie needs. As they grow, their energy demands change, so our calorie calculator adjusts accordingly to suggest the best portion size for them.
We’ll never change your cat’s portion automatically, as this would also change the price of your plan. Instead, we’ll suggest the new portion size, and you can choose whether to update it in your account. If you update your kittens details in your account and no new portion size is suggested, their current portion will be right for them.
To keep everything accurate, we recommend updating your kitten’s weight every 3 months at minimum or even more often during growth spurts in the early months.
💡 Tip: Update your kitten’s details every time you visit the vet for a check-up. Your vet can provide an accurate weight, and it’s a great opportunity to review your cat’s Body Condition Score (BCS) and activity level too.
How your kitten’s portion size changes as they grow
Kittens need more calories
Kittens burn a lot of energy exploring, playing, and growing. They need more calories per kilogram than adult cats which is why their portion size starts larger.
As they approach 12 months old, their growth rate slows, and their portion will likely need to decrease. Each time you update their weight, we’ll recommend the right portion for their current life stage.
Moving toward adulthood
Once your kitten reaches around 1 year old, they’re considered an adult. At this stage, their metabolism and activity level can change. Be sure to keep these details up to date in your account as this helps our calculator keep your cat’s calories balanced for healthy adult maintenance.

How KatKin calculates portion sizes
At KatKin, we offers six portion sizes:
150kcal • 200kcal • 250kcal • 300kcal • 350kcal • 400kcal
Our calorie calculator takes into account:
Weight (kg)
Age
Body Condition Score (BCS) — skinny, just right, chubby, obese
Activity level — inactive, active, explorer
You can update these details anytime in your account. Changes may cause the calculator to suggest a different portion size, but the choice is always yours to confirm.
If your kitten eats only KatKin, we recommend following the suggested portion for the best balance of nutrients and calories.
Feeding kittens more than twice a day
Kittens often prefer smaller, more frequent meals - sometimes every 3–4 hours! Their portions may seem incredibly large, compared to standard cat food sachets but that's because they need more calories to support growth (often 350–400kcal per day).
You can easily split their trays into smaller “mouse-sized” portions:
Spoon out what your kitten needs for one meal
Store the rest in the fridge for later, just pop it in a Tupperware container in the fridge.
As your kitten grows, you can gradually transition from several small meals a day to three, and eventually two meals a day around 12 months old.
For fussy adult cats or grazers, smaller meals can also help - it’s perfectly fine to divide a tray across multiple feeding times.
Maintaining healthy weight and Body condition
KatKin’s meal plans are designed to help your kitten reach and maintain their ideal weight. If your kitten gains or loses weight on KatKin, make sure to review and update:
Weight
BCS (Body Condition Score)
Activity level
For example, if your kitten was previously “skinny” and is now at a healthy weight, change their BCS to “just right” so the calculator adjusts to maintain this new balance.
Keeping these details up to date helps ensure your kitten always receives the perfect amount of food: no more, no less.
