Pregnancy and Weaning Kittens

Feeding Pregnant Cats and Weaning Kittens on KatKin

Can pregnant cats eat KatKin?

Yes! KatKin is suitable for healthy pregnant queens.

During pregnancy, your cat's body is working hard to support her growing kittens, so it's completely normal for her calorie requirements to increase as the pregnancy progresses. Calorie needs will gradually increase throughout pregnancy, sometimes by around 10% each week.

You may notice her appetite increasing over time, and that's perfectly expected.

The exact number of calories she'll need depends on:

  • How far along she is in her pregnancy

  • Her current weight and Body Condition Score (BCS)

  • Her overall health

Because every pregnancy is different, we always recommend speaking to your vet about how much to increase her food intake. They'll be able to assess her body condition and recommend the most appropriate calorie target throughout the pregnancy.

Once you've spoken with your vet, you can adjust your KatKin plan to match those calorie requirements in your account. We offer tray sizes ranging from 150-400kcal and can help you choose the most suitable option or suggest how to split meals across the day.

In the meantime, keep a close eye on your cat's appetite, weight and energy levels

If you notice any unwell signs like vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced appetite or lethargy, it's important to contact your vet promptly.

Can kittens be weaned onto KatKin?

Absolutely!

Kittens need far more calories for their body size than adult cats. They need all that extra energy to fuel healthy growth, development and, of course, the occasional zoomies.

Our calorie calculator provides personalised feeding recommendations for kittens from 8 weeks of age, but younger kittens can also be weaned onto KatKin.

If mum is already eating KatKin, even better! Kittens often learn what food is safe by watching their mother, which can help make the transition even smoother.

Please note: Our Baaa recipe isn't suitable for kittens under 12 months of age. If Mum usually enjoys Baaa, we recommend choosing our other recipes while the kittens are weaning. Once Mum and her kittens are eating separately, Baaa can be added back into Mum's meal rotation.

Tips for weaning kittens onto KatKin

Make sure each kitten is eating enough

Growing kittens have high energy requirements, so portion size is incredibly important.

We recommend speaking with your vet to determine exactly how many calories each kitten needs during weaning.

Monitor weight and Body Condition Score (BCS)

As kittens grow rapidly, it's important to monitor their weight and Body Condition Score regularly to make sure they're developing as expected.

Our Body Condition Score guide can help you assess whether your kitten is maintaining a healthy body condition.

Keep your KatKin plan up to date

Kittens grow quickly, so their calorie requirements change regularly.

Once your kittens reach 8 weeks of age, our calorie calculator can personalise their portions based on their age, weight and body condition. We recommend updating their details frequently throughout their first year so their meal plan keeps pace with their growth.

If you're unsure whether their plan still looks right, our Cat Experts are always happy to help.

Speak to your vet before weaning

Before starting the weaning process, we always recommend arranging a health check with your vet.

They'll be able to confirm your kittens are developing well, provide guidance throughout weaning and advise on their individual calorie requirements.

If your vet would like more information about our recipes or ingredients, they can find everything they need on our product pages.
