Why does my cat seem hungry after switching to KatKin?
It’s completely normal to worry if your cat seems hungry when you first switch to fresh food - you’re not alone, and in most cases there’s a simple explanation.
KatKin is very different from dry or tinned food, so some cats need a little time to adjust. Below we’ll explain why this can happen and what you can do to help.
First things first: are we feeding the right amount?
We calculate your cat’s daily calories using their age, weight, activity level and body condition score (BCS). This helps us work out exactly how much food they need to stay healthy.
If your cat seems hungry, it’s worth double-checking that these details are up to date in your account. Even small changes in weight or activity can affect how many calories they need.
You can:
👉 Update your cat’s details in your online account
👉 Increase the calorie amount yourself if needed
👉 Or get in touch with our Cat Experts and we’ll happily help you review it
If you do decide to increase calories, we recommend keeping an eye on your cat’s weight and body condition as you go.
Why might my cat feel hungrier on fresh food?
KatKin is high in protein and highly digestible, with no unnecessary fillers. That’s great for your cat’s health - but it can feel different at first.
Some cats:
Eat more quickly because the food is tastier
Are used to larger volumes of lower-quality food (for example, eating 3-4 sachets of cat food or having dry food to graze on during the day)
Need time to adjust to a new texture and calorie density
This usually settles as your cat learns that their new food keeps them satisfied.
Simple ways to help your cat feel more satisfied
Feed little and often
Splitting meals into smaller portions throughout the day can really help. Our trays can be kept in the fridge for up to 2 days once opened, making this nice and easy.
Try food puzzles
Food puzzles or slow feeders help cats eat more slowly and feel fuller for longer. They also add enrichment - which can reduce “asking for food” behaviour.
Use treats wisely
Offering a small number of 100% meat treats between meals can help take the edge off hunger. You can also crumble treats over meals for extra interest.
Just remember that treats count as calories, so it’s best to keep portions sensible.
If your cat is still adjusting
Some cats simply take a bit longer to get used to fresh food. It’s normal for the transition to take up to two weeks - which is why our trial box lasts that long.
As long as your cat is:
Maintaining a healthy weight
Eating their meals
Acting like themselves
…then things are likely heading in the right direction.
If your cat continues to seem very hungry after this period, it’s always a good idea to mention it at their next vet check-up, just to rule out any underlying causes.
A final reassurance
Cats in the wild eat a careful balance of protein and fat - and that’s exactly what our fresh recipes provide. While the adjustment period can feel worrying, sticking with it often leads to better digestion, improved energy, and a healthier coat. And remember: you're in complete control. If you'd like to adjust your cat's portion size, you can do this at any time in your online account.
