Is KatKin Suitable for Cats with IBD or Digestive Issues?

Highly digestible, low residue diets (like KatKin) are commonly recommended for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and other chronic digestive disorders in cats. Our recipes can promote healthy digestion in the following ways:

  • Single source protein options – Mooo, Cluck and Oink all contain only one protein source, which is great for cats who may be sensitive to certain proteins.

  • Novel protein – Oink could be a good option for cats who have been sensitive to a range of proteins, depending on their diet history. This recipe contains only pork protein, which is often considered a novel (new) protein for many cats.

  • Highly digestible and high quality ingredients

  • Grain-free – we don’t include grains in our recipes, which can trigger sensitivities for some cats. Cats are carnivores after all!

This recipes are made with fresh, 100% human-quality meat with no fillers, grains, sugars, food additives, or emulsifiers, making KatKin a clean choice for sensitive digestive systems.

We’ve received positive feedback from cat parents whose cats have been diagnosed with IBD or have experienced other gastrointestinal issues, but it’s important to always speak to your vet before making any changes to your cat’s diet - particularly if they have a history of digestive issues.

Gradual Transition for Cats with Sensitive Stomachs: If your cat is quite sensitive or prone to digestive upset, consider gradually mixing small amounts of KatKin into their current food. This step-by-step approach allows their digestive system to better adjust without overwhelming them.

Are certain KatKin recipes better for cats with IBD or IBS?

When it comes to sensitive stomachs or ongoing digestive issues, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. Every cat is different, and the best recipes will depend on how your individual cat responds to specific ingredients.

Food intolerances can play a big role, so it may take a little trial and observation to find what suits them best.

As a starting point, many cat parents choose to begin with Cluck, as it’s our most popular recipe and tends to be well accepted. From there, you can see how your cat gets on and make adjustments if needed. If your cat has a known intolerance to chicken or other poultry, it’s best to start with a different recipe instead.

If your cat has been diagnosed with IBD, IBS, or any other digestive condition, it’s always a good idea to speak with your vet before making changes. They can help guide you towards the most suitable approach for your cat’s specific needs.

Finding the right fit can take a bit of time, but once you do, it can make a real difference to your cat’s comfort and wellbeing.

Does KatKin contain any plant-based ingredients?

2 of our recipes contain sunflower oil - Mooo and Splash. Our other 5 recipes contain no plant-based ingredients at all. We don't include tapioca starch in any of our recipes.

What's the difference between IBD and IBS?

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): a sudden (acute) bout of digestive distress, often linked to stress.

  • Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD): long term (chronic) inflammation of the digestive system (usually the stomach and/or intestines). The specific cause of IBD in cats is often unknown and may have multiple contributing factors, making it tricky to diagnose and manage.

Conducting a Food Elimination Trial

Your vet may suggest a food elimination trial if your cat has suspected dietary sensitivities. A food elimination trial can help identify problematic ingredients. Steps include:

  1. Selecting a single-protein diet with a novel protein, like KatKin’s Oink (pork), particularly effective if common proteins (chicken, fish) caused issues.

  2. Consistently feeding only this diet for 4–8 weeks.

  3. Avoiding any other foods or treats to ensure accuracy.

  4. Monitoring your cat closely and consulting a vet if symptoms persist.

Combining KatKin with Other Specialised Diets

In cases where your cat is on a hypoallergenic kibble or other specialised diet, KatKin meals can be integrated into the feeding plan. Always consult your vet before combining diets to ensure it meets your cat's nutritional and health needs.
