Switching a cat to KatKin can be tricky if they really love their current food, especially as KatKin is so different from supermarket cat food.
From Kibble to KatKin
If you’ve been through the tips in our switching article but your cat is looking at his bag of dry food longingly, we might need to change tactics.
Dry food couldn’t be more different to KatKin, so it might take your cat longer to switch. But that’s no problem! We’ve got special tips for kibble-addicts below.
Instead of feeding just KatKin and keeping a bowl of dried food out for your cat to snack on, try combining them.
Add a spoon of KatKin onto a plate, and cover the food with kibble.
Even if your cat eats their dry food and leaves the KatKin at first, continue to do this
Slowly, as your cat eats their biscuits, they’ll most likely try a bit of KatKin by accident and start to get used to the taste.
After a few days if you notice your cat is beginning to finish their KatKin too, great! Slowly increase the amount of KatKin and decrease the amount of kibble over the next week or 2.
Persevere! Some cats can take more than 2 weeks to switch away from kibble, so remember to delay your next box in your account or read our steps here.
An open tray of KatKin lasts for 2 days in the fridge, so take fewer trays of KatKin out of the freezer during this time to prevent waste.
Changes you might notice in your cat
Cats on a kibble only or majority dry food diet will need to drink lots of water, to get the moisture they need. You might notice they start to drink less water, as they eat more KatKin. That’s because KatKin is made up of nearly 70% moisture!
Their stools might become smaller, firmer and less frequent. With fewer grains and carbs in their diet, the poop in the litter tray might change too. You should also start to notice less of a smell.
Worried about their teeth?
Cats need kibble to clean their teeth, right? Actually, there’s no independent research to confirm this. The most effective way to look after cats’ teeth is daily brushing with a cat-safe toothpaste. Using kibble to clean teeth is about as effective as a digestive biscuit to clean ours!
