We’ve spent a lot of time choosing delivery packaging that is as environmentally friendly as possible: from the wool insulation to the ice packs that keep the food nice and cold, allowing our deliveries to be carbon neutral.
Boxes:
The cardboard boxes and toppers (in food deliveries) are kerbside recyclable and made of FSC-certified cardboard. This means that our cardboard is sourced from sustainably-managed forests.
We’ve chosen to use water-based ink on our boxes as it is better for the environment, using less petroleum and chemicals compared to other solvent-based inks.

Ice packs:
Our white ice packs contain only pure, filtered and non-toxic water. So you can pierce them or cut them open to drain the water straight down the sink (or use them to water your plants 🪴). They’re made from 100% LDPE recyclable film which can be safely kerbside recycled with some local councils. Or taken to a soft-plastic recycling scheme at your local supermarket or Pets at Home. For sustainability, you’ll just receive one ice pack in winter and 2 in summer months.
Wool insulation:
The WoolCool insulation in your box is completely natural, sheep’s wool insulator. It’s completely biodegradable and compostable. After keeping your trays cool during delivery, it doubles as perfect material for crafts (like cat beds), keeping plants or outdoor pipes warm during winter, or even for bird nesting material. Check out WoolCool’s page here for even more recycling ideas.
WoolCool also has a return scheme, see below for details.
If you’re not able to return your wool and if you don’t have a compost heap, pop it in your garden waste bin or general waste as a last resort. It will biodegrade naturally, leaving no trace in landfill.
The plastic bag it comes in is 100% recyclable, food grade polythene — just separate it from the wool and recycle with your ice packs at a soft-plastic recycling scheme or at home if your council allows.
How to Return Your WoolCool

Then drop off up to 3 boxes at your local DPD drop-off location.
WoolCool will be able to recycle your wool or reuse the liners!
Trays:
KatKin’s mission has always been to prioritise the quality and safety of fresh food for cats. Our plastic package has been carefully chosen to be able to withstand our cooking process, so we’re able to maintain the high quality our customers expect.
Is the plastic safe to cook in?
Our flexible trays are made from a food-grade film called polypropylene - and nothing else. They’re BPA-free and contain no plasticisers or oestrogen-like compounds. And are completely safe to cook in.
We’ve chosen our plastic trays because they’re able to withstand the extreme temperature differences when steaming and freezing our food. They’re also durable enough to withstand the journey to your door, so they can be safely fed to your cat.
Can I recycle the trays?
Due to the complex nature of cooking and freezing our fresh food, there’s very limited materials on the market that suit our needs and are also recyclable. This means that our plastic trays can’t be recycled, which we know is less than ideal. .
We’re hopeful that there soon will be a plastic on the market that is both kerbside recyclable and can withstand our cooking process. We’re working closely with packaging suppliers to enable this innovation in the future.
Sprinkles jars:
Our jars of chicken Sprinkles can be easily recycled at home. Just peel the label off, and pop the glass jar + lid in your recycling. Or wash out the jar and re-use it!
Nibbles tubes:
Our Nibbles tubes are made from cardboard and plastic. The plastic can be recycled at soft plastic recycling schemes.
