How can I change the texture of KatKin food to suit my cat?

If your cat has specific dental or texture needs, our fresh food is available in 3 textures. We'll help you find the best texture for your cat below.

What KatKin textures are available?

Every cat has their own preferences, especially when it comes to texture. That’s why our Fresh meals are now available in three different textures: Chunky, Shredded and Smooth.

You can choose different textures when selecting your cat’s recipes, or make a few simple changes to the Chunky KatKin you might have stored in your freezer, if your cat prefers their food even softer.

Chunky

Our original KatKin texture, with larger pieces of gently cooked meat.

There are eight recipes available in our Chunky texture:

  • Cluck

  • Gobble

  • Quack

  • Mooo

  • Oink

  • Baaa

  • Splash

  • Swish

You might have seen these recipes referred to as our Classic recipes before. We’ve simply renamed this texture to Chunky. The recipes themselves haven’t changed.

Shredded

A softer, lighter texture with visible shreds of chicken or turkey.

Our Shredded recipes are:

  • Shredded Cluck

  • Shredded Gobble

If your cat enjoys a stringier or more shredded consistency, these are a great option to try.

Smooth

Our Smooth meals are similar to our Chunky recipes, but are more similar to a mousse or pâté, creating a finer texture.

Our Smooth recipes are:

  • Smooth Cluck

  • Smooth Peck

They’re another option for cats who prefer to lap up their food or lick their plates clean.

There’s no texture that’s better than another. Cats can be very particular about the way their food feels, so it’s all about finding the recipes and textures your cat enjoys most.

Finding your cat’s favourite texture

Cats can have strong preferences when it comes to texture, so it can take a little experimenting to find their favourite.

You can mix and match recipes and textures in your box, so your cat doesn’t have to stick to just one. For example, they might love Chunky Mooo but prefer their chicken Smooth or Shredded.

If your cat is particularly selective, trying another texture can be a simple way to find out whether it’s the recipe or the consistency they’re unsure about.

Whichever texture they choose, they’ll still be getting the fresh, gently cooked meat KatKin is known for.

Best methods to change the texture of Chunky KatKin recipes

If your cat prefers smoother or softer meals, but you have some Chunky KatKin trays still in your freezer, here are some common techniques you can use:

  1. Add warm water: - Mix in one to two tablespoons of warm water to soften the food.

  2. Microwave briefly: - Heat the tray for about 15 seconds in the microwave. This loosens the texture by warming the meat juices and melting fat particularly in recipes like Mooo or Baaa.

  3. Mash with a fork: - After adding water or warming, thoroughly mash the food to break down any chunks.

These adjustments can create a mousse-like or smoother consistency. Some of our customers have even let us know they've gone the extra mile and blended their cat's food (using a separate blender.) This works really well for cats who need a liquid diet and can't pick up food with their teeth, and you can rest assured that they're still getting all the vital nutrients they need.

These methods work great to help cats with:

  • Gingivitis

  • missing teeth

  • oral pain or mouth sores

Sadly, we can't accept returns of food, in exchange for other recipes/textures but if you've tried KatKin before and you'd like to try our new Shredded or Smooth textures, get in touch with our Cat Experts for help.

Enhancing meals for picky eaters

If your cat is selective about food texture, you can adjust the meal to suit their preferences:

  • Add a small amount of warm water to release natural meat juices and create a soup-like consistency.

  • Thoroughly mash the food to mimic a mousse texture if your cat prefers pâté-like meals.

We find that warming the food can help to release the strong scent of the meat too, which can make it smell even more enticing. This is perfect for senior cats whose sense of smell may not be as strong.

By implementing these simple adjustments, you can ensure that KatKin meals work well for your cat, regardless of its dental sensitivity, texture preferences, or hydration needs. If you have further questions, feel free to reach out to our Cat Expert team and our In-house Vet Nurse.
