What is meant by “fresh matter” or “as fed”?
“Fresh matter” or “as fed” refers to the nutritional information of our fresh recipes in its natural state - including all the moisture it contains.
This means the nutrient values reflect the food exactly as it appears in your cat’s bowl at mealtime.
What does “Dry Matter” mean and why is it important?
“Dry Matter” shows the nutrient content of food after all moisture has been removed.
This makes it easier to compare the nutrient levels of different types of food, since moisture can vary greatly between them.
Understanding the Dry Matter value is helpful if your cat has specific dietary or health needs and your vet requests nutritional information on a Dry Matter basis.
To calculate the Dry Matter value, you’ll need two pieces of information:
The nutrient percentage “As Fed”
The food’s moisture content (as a percentage)
Online “dry Matter” calculators can be helpful, or you can use the following calculation:
Example:
Nutrient level = 11%
Moisture level = 68%
Subtract the moisture percentage from 100:
100−68= 32
2. Divide the nutrient level (A) by the result from step 1
11/32= 0.34375
3. Convert to percentage - multiply the result from step 2 by 100 to get the dry matter basis percentage:
0.34375×100=34.4%
So, the Dry Matter (DM) percentage for the nutrient level of 11% with a moisture level of 68% is 34.4%.
