I don’t know my cat’s body condition score (BCS)

How to sign up for KatKin if you're not sure what your cat's body condition is

Updated this week

First, let's define what a Body Condition Score or BCS is. A body condition score is a measure of the “shape” of your cat’s body. Vet professionals use 9 different scores to determine how and where fat sits on a cat’s body, but we narrow this down to 4.

Image showing the 4 body condition scores KatKin uses to measure a cat's body shape. Skinny, Just Right, Chubby, and Obese.

If you’re not quite sure where your cat’s body condition score sits, read our descriptions below:

  1. Skinny: tummy is significantly tucked in, with easy to feel ribs and bones that are showing.

  2. Just right: ribs are easily felt, with some fat cover and a visible waistline.

  3. Chubby: waistline is starting to disappear, and ribs cannot be easily felt.

  4. Obese: no waistline visible and has a large tummy; ribs are very difficult to feel with lots of fat on top.

For cats who are ‘just right’, we’ll consider them to be their ideal weight and take this into account when choosing a portion size for their trial box.

If a cat is skinny, chubby or obese, we’ll take this into account too and adjust the portion size accordingly.

  • If you select that your cat is 'skinny' we'll send a portion size to help them put on weight and reach their ideal size.

  • For 'chubby' or 'obese' cats, we'll send a portion size to help them lose weight safely and reach their ideal, smaller size.

Like weight, your cat’s body condition can be changed in your online account afterwards. An online account is automatically created once you order a trial box.
